Emergence
Build your own being.
A uniquely human-centric interactive narrative experience, Emergence, produced with Synarcade, was a theatre-based installation that gave audience members the the responsibility of deciding on the attributes and traits of a being that would ultimately be created by the end of the session. It used computer-vision techniques and glow headbands that audience wore throughout the show to determine what the majority decision for each trait was, with a strong awareness of the power of physical proximity. The piece was a prime example of a rigorous system where the sum of its parts - physical, virtual and human - was much greater than its individual components.
For this project I worked on the interactive voting system. This involved developing computer vision algorithms which detected the number of glow-sticks of different colours, in various parts of the room, from an overhead camera. A live interface which fit the visual theme of the show was then developed which displayed these results throughout the show, projected onto a 5th "projection surface".
