The AVIE 360, 3D Visualisation Environment

The Advanced Visualisation Interaction Environment is a 360-degree stereoscopic 3D display system that utilises state-of-the-art projection hardware and cutting-edge software techniques to deliver unique artistic pieces and practical simulations.

Developed at the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research at the University of New South Wales, the AVIE can accommodate up to 20 audience members at once, and has a host of applications set that can only be described as diverse. From a 'Minority Report'-styled video database exploratory system (TVisionarium) to underground mine safety simulations developed for Coal Services, the AVIE is the cornerstone of a set of groundbreaking interactive experiences.

While at the iCinema centre, as system architect, I updated the hardware and software infrastructure of the AVIE system to be suitable for commercial deployment. As technical manager of the centre, and as an independent consultant working with Immersive Realisation, I have managed the deployment of over 12 permanent AVIE installations across Australia, Hong Kong and China.

I also designed a new version of the system, suitable for touring. The system in a touring configuration has toured to many exhibitions sites across Europe, Asia, and the US.

With Damian Leonard from Immersive Realisation, I have worked on the sales and marketing of AVIE systems around the world, and I have been a project manager of multi-million dollar projects delivered to coal mining safety training clients.
